Background on the litigation

Former pupils of Papplewick School have instructed specialist lawyers to pursue civil claims in relation to historic sexual abuse and the School's handling of safeguarding concerns. Because a significant number of individuals are affected, the legal team is working towards the court managing these claims together through a Group Litigation Order.

We cannot guarantee that former pupils or their representatives will be able to participate in every interview request, but all messages marked as media enquiries will be passed on in a timely way.

Approach to anonymity and trauma informed reporting

Many former pupils who are considering legal action do not want their names or identifying details to be published. Some may be willing to share experiences on background but not for direct quotation. Others may choose to speak on the record.

Any interviews or quotes involving survivors will be arranged on the basis of clear, prior agreement about how they will be described, how quotes can be used, and whether anonymity will be preserved. We ask that editors and producers respect those agreements and avoid publishing details that could indirectly identify individuals who have asked to remain anonymous.

Comment, accuracy, and ongoing proceedings

The group action sits alongside criminal investigations and regulatory processes. For legal and ethical reasons there will be limits on what can be said about:

• Any criminal cases that are still before the courts.
• Unresolved complaints or regulatory investigations.
• Private information about individuals who are not in the public domain.

We will try to assist with factual clarification and general background wherever possible. Where a statement is provided on behalf of the group, it will usually be cleared by the legal team before being given, and should be quoted in full and in context.
